October blog
Earlier in the year we thought about moving the children from their school to one which was mornings only, we decided against it because it Lettie was doing her first communion this year and we felt it would be cruel for her to miss out on doing it with all her friends. The first communion took place this October and we all were delighted that Stella was able to be there. We always feel very lacking in family, especially compared to the locales here, who are normally one of eight and when there is a celebrations it is always a 50+ event, but I am sure that having someone come all the way from England for it, counted for at least 20 cousins who had come from San Lorenzo.
Her novelty was felt by all and she was quickly roped in by Millie's jardin to come and talk about her life in Mexico and London. Keeping 5 and 6 year olds interested for more than 5 minutes is always a challenge, but Stella managed it wonderfully. The children were amazed by the British steering wheel being on the other side of the car and driving on the other side of the road and the fact they really couldn't believe was that dogs lived inside. All the time. And that she takes the dog with her in the car and leaves the window open for him for fresh air. At this point the Seno stepped in and said, that here the car would vanish here if there was even a 1cm gap for a thief to access.
They then moved on to ask her questions about music and the senos were delighted to hear about her neighbours of the Rolling Stones in the 1960s, who are called the “Rollings” here. They then moved on to the punk era, which the children seriously didn't understand, despite Stella demonstrating their hairstyle with her hands held flat together above the head. The Seno then drew a picture of them, but it look more like a cone head person. The mysteries of the punks are yet to be discovered by the children of San Lorenzo. We were reminded of Stella's trip to jardin later in November when her demonstration of a punk was shown on a big screen before Millie's end of year acto.
Of course the main event of October was Lettie's first communion. This took place at the surprisingly early time of 9am, which made it a huge rush in the morning. Getting her hair exactly how she wanted it was apparently very important and took much longer than I anticipated it could. We had luckily been able to borrow a tunic/robe dress that she was required to wear, which was a great weight off my mind. The weather was pretty chilly and I layer her up underneath as much as possible to try and make sure she didn't freeze during the ceremony. Poor Stella, who was not prepared for our unseasonable weather, I think was forced to wear all the clothes that she brought, in an attempt to stay warm. The rest of us were reliant on thermals. I think it was the same for Kit's first communion, where it even snowed not too far away.
They orchestrate it extremely well and there is a souvenir DVD in case we missed anything, as well as the official photos. Its great that Lettie will have such a special memory of her first communion like Kit. I have a feeling that Millie's in England won't be a similar level of spectacular.
